Nadine

I look at her, stunned, wondering how she knows I’m pregnant. I don’t want her to see me as a burden because of it.

She senses my hesitation and moves closer, holding my hand. “Nadine, I’m not trying to push you to tell me. I just want you to be comfortable around me.”

“Or have I given you any reason to?”

I shake my head vigorously. “No, no,” and then hug her tightly, becoming emotional again. “Oh, Sydney, you’re just too good to be true.”

Sydney hugs me back gently. “I’m glad you feel that way. We’re friends, and I want you to know that you can trust me with anything.”

I pull back slightly, wiping away a tear. “It means so much to me to hear that. I’ve been so worried about how to handle everything.”

“I’m here with you every step of the way,” Sydney says. “And that baby is my godson. I won’t let any harm come to him, not even from that guy—what’s his name again?”
