Chapter 4

Selene walked slowly to her parents’ room, filled with a slight fear of the unknown. She was in no hurry to meet her mom. Too soon, she got to the door. The universe seemed to be against her today. If it wasn’t, it would have made time stop until she was ready to face her mom. Although to be honest, she could never be fully ready to face her mom.

Luna Margot was the sweetest person she knew; she loved every member of the pack and didn’t hesitate to help when a pack member was in need. But she was also a very formidable woman.

Selene could bet most people in the pack feared her mother more than they did her father. Her mom just had a way of making even the mightiest warrior feel small when she was angry. So yes, Selene had enough reason to have sweaty palms as she prepared herself to knock.

The door suddenly swung open before she had the opportunity to knock. Selene stared wide-eyed at her mother, who looked at her with poorly concealed laughter in her eyes.

“You were taking forever to knock, Pumpkin. Come in.” Margot opened the door widely and ushered her daughter in.

Margot was a beauty, just like her daughter. She had blonde hair and blue eyes that had specks of earthy green in them. Her eyes reminded Selene of nature. They looked like home. Selene looked more like her mother, but she had her father’s temper.

Selene had never seen her mom lose control of her emotions; she was always calm and level-headed. When she was angry, you could tell by her eyes. Her eyes would hold you down in a lethal stare until you just had to submit to her. Selene avoided making her mom angry.

Margot watched her daughter shuffle her feet towards the bed she was on. She could not believe how much her little girl had grown. It felt just like yesterday when the pack daughter placed a baby with the brightest blue eyes she had ever seen in her arms. She could still remember how the moon seemed to shine brightly on her little angel.

She smiled sadly as she watched her daughter. She didn’t want her little girl to grow so fast. The topic she was about to discuss with her didn’t help in letting her ignore how her daughter was turning into an adult.

Selene sat awkwardly on the bed beside her mom. She pointedly avoided looking at her. She was supposed to continue ignoring her parents. She cleared her throat as she wondered what to say to break the silence.

“Jay said you wanted to speak to me, Mama.” Yeah, that was a good start, she thought. She made sure to speak flatly so her mom would know she was only here because she couldn’t disobey her.

“Pumpkin, are you still upset?”

Selene didn’t respond. She was, and her mom knew that.

Margot shook her head in exasperation. Her daughter was as stubborn as her mate. It always amused her when father and daughter fought, and her mate complained about how stubborn their daughter was. She was quick to remind him the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

But at that moment, Selene’s stubbornness was not amusing. Normally, she would call her daughter out for her behavior, but not today. She had to tread carefully so what she had to discuss with her daughter would go smoothly.

Margot scooted closer to Selene. “Your father and I are sorry, Pumpkin. But you can’t deny the fact that what you both did was dangerous. You could’ve ended up more hurt than you were that night,” she tried to reason with her daughter.

Selene bowed her head in shame. Her cheeks were stained with color, which made her freckles more pronounced. She knew her mom was right. What they did was really stupid. She felt the remaining anger towards her parents dissipate.

Margot felt exactly when her daughter relaxed. The bond between them felt lighter; the tension that had been straining the bond for days was gone. She pulled her little girl in a hug, and they both breathed in each other’s scent.

The scent was essential to werewolves. The scent of a loved one was comforting. After not properly speaking with each other for days, they needed a few minutes to bond again. Margot could feel her wolf purr in satisfaction. Her wolf saw Selene as her pup, too.

After a few minutes, Selene broke away from the hug and looked at her mother with a smile. “So why did you want to see me?” she asked with her hands in her mother’s.

Margot couldn’t help the laughter that came after that question. It was just like her daughter to go straight to the point to hide her embarrassment. But she could feel it through the bond and the little bit of color on Selene’s face and neck. Selene didn’t know how to deal with the emotions that surrounded love. She decided to let her daughter go this once.

“I called you to talk about two things. First, did you have that dream again?” Margot looked at her daughter with concern. Since the first time she found out about the dream her daughter always had on her birthday, she had been worried. The pack doctor couldn’t explain what the dream was about, and even her witch friend could not find the cause.

Selene nodded in response. Margot held her hand tighter. “There was a difference this time, though,” she told her mom in a shaky voice. “When I woke up, it felt like someone touched my face. There was no sign of anybody in my room, but my face tingled like someone caressed it. The same thing happened last year.” She felt a shiver down her spine, and it wasn’t pleasant.

She swallowed as she tried to confess the fear that had been bothering her since her seventeenth birthday.

“I think it was him, Mama. The voice that’s always in my dreams. I think he was in my room that day,” she confessed to her mom. Her mom stared at her with fear in her eyes that mirrored her own.
