Chapter 30. Out of This World
“Beep, beep, beep.” Alexander listened to the annoying sound, the only sound he had heard consistently for a long time. He sat at the side of Isabella’s bed, not that she had any idea, but it felt more comfortable knowing he was sitting right here.
The guilt began to resurface, but he quelled it. It wouldn’t consume him, not now, at least. He was deserving of the punishment, but today was the worst time.
His hands skimmed over her palm as he watched her bruised face for any sign of movement. Nothing. Just like the past week.
An oxygen mask was hooked over her face, and different pipes connected to her body.
Alexander yawned. He took showers in the hospital room, a private ward reserved for just Isabella. He called home to request a change of clothes, directing Gretchen on which clothes to pick out; eventually, a duffel bag containing his necessities sat next to the uncomfortable couch that he had slept on for most days.
