Chapter 38. The Unexpected
“Excuse me?” Willow stared at Veronica without blinking. It felt like she was being held at gunpoint, completely unable to object. Willow’s mind felt empty; she didn’t know what else to say to Veronica.
“This is for Zoey’s sake,” Veronica continued.
Willow shook her head reflexively. “No. Zoey and I have our own lives, and suddenly, we’re supposed to move to a strange place. I need to think about it.”
“A strange place?” Veronica looked surprised. She sat down next to Willow. “Why do you say that?”
Willow lowered her face, trying to hold back tears that left her speechless. Veronica sighed softly and gently patted Willow’s hand, making Willow feel even more helpless.
“Max and I are Zoey’s family. And you’re part of us, Willow. I was shocked to see you alone with Zoey,” Veronica continued. “I feel terribly guilty and want to make it up to you. Give us a chance to take care of you and Zoey.”
