Chapter 40. Captured

Max was talking with Willow and Zoey in the backyard when Shawn arrived. A strange feeling gripped Shawn; he witnessed a serene atmosphere as he looked at the three figures warmly bonding. Should Shawn interrupt what could have been a happy moment?

“Detective,” Max called out, noticing Shawn’s presence.

Shawn approached awkwardly, trying to maintain a casual expression.

“I’m about to say goodbye,” Shawn said.

Whether Shawn’s decision to cover up the recent events was right or wrong, he didn’t want to add to the atmosphere, even if it sounded selfish.

“Oh, this is all of a sudden,” Max seemed surprised. “Weren’t you supposed to talk to Kyler?”

“He’s left,” Shawn sighed.

“Leaving’? What do you mean?” This time, Willow’s voice sounded worried. “Why hasn’t he come to see me or Zoey? What really happened?”

There was a pause for a few seconds when Shawn didn’t answer immediately.

“Detective, where did he go?” Willow asked again.
