Elise’s POV

There was no point in worrying her further.

But then, the ground beneath me shifted.

I didn’t have time to react. One moment I was walking, the next I was falling.

The earth gave way under my feet, and I felt myself being pulled downwards.

A sharp shout escaped my lips as I realized what was happening.

I was falling into a pit—a deep one, by the feel of it. My hands tried to reach for something to hold on to, anything that could stop me from going deeper.

“Elise!” Rose’s voice was sharp with panic as she ran forward, grabbing my arm just in time.

I felt her fingers dig into my skin as she struggled to keep me from falling all the way in.

For a moment, I was suspended there, half in and half out of the pit.

My legs dangled into the hole below, and I could feel the loose soil catching up beneath me.

Fear gripped me as I realized just how deep the pit might be.
