Andrew shook his head at the way Pops hand tightened around the screw driver. “It’s not that. I mean, she loves to work. Even in the city, my brother offered her an opportunity to stay home and she insisted on going to work. That’s why I mean.”
“This town isn’t a gold mine of opportunities. Not like it used to be before the city became what it is today. Used to be a town of coal miners ‘till we moved to liquid gold. Heads up, boy.” Pops threw some things down.
Andrew caught the screw driver and the tub. “Thanks for the warning.”
“You are holding my ladder, as you said. Would be foolish of me to knock you down while I’m up here but when I’m down there, that’s another matter entirely.” Pops smiled at him. “Now, the only opportunities available are seasonal jobs. Everyone is hanging on hard to what they have. And that restaurant does so poorly that even it were to change hands, I still wouldn’t allow Elaine to work there.”
