Chapter 38. Presley
“Presley wants to see you.” Charles threw his gray scarf over his shoulders.
“What for?” Elaine pushed her chair back, standing on her feet.
“Beats me.”
Elaine’s stomach churned as she rubbed her temple. The last time Presley asked someone to summon her, he demoted her. She began to twist her fingers, murmuring under her breath. “Timothy had better not get me in trouble. I gave him my chocolate.”
She stood in front of his door and took a breath, tossing her braided ponytail behind her head and knocking on the door.
“Come in,” Presley said in his measured, slow, characteristic way.
She stepped in. Her eyes caught the sticky notes plastered on the walls of his office. She admired his meticulous method of taking them down before each meeting and putting each one back up again in the exact same place, as well as rewriting the ones that didn’t stick any more.
