Chapter 72. Bennett
“Melvin, please slow down.”
She tried to walk faster in her ill-fitting heels but Melvin seemed to take five of her footsteps in one giant stride as he stalked toward the car.
He reached the end of the pathway and she broke into a run. It wasn’t unlike him to leave her stranded in his fits of anger. How would she get home?
He dug into his pocket and retrieved his phone before pointing it at the car. The car beeped, tail lights flashing with the colors red, orange and white for the length of the beep. He yanked the car door and it refused to open.
Good – because she’d just arrived at the car door. “Why did you hit them?”
“Open your stupid door!” Melvin screamed, his hands curling around the door handle.
Elaine wrapped her hands around herself and leaned against the passenger door. For a few moments back there, when he’d held her, she’d thought she could get along with this semi reasonable Melvin but the immature childish man had returned.
