Chapter 77. River Dump
The latch flew open as her chin came down hard on the surface of the phone – all reservations about breaking the phone screen forgotten. The phone beeped as her kidnapper jumped into the basement.
“We’re back.” He turned to her.
She tried to confirm that she wanted to call emergency services.
“You little…” The man swore underneath his breath as he ran across the room.
He dropped something on the table, then pulled her chair backwards. All forward thrusting of her weight leaning against the table proved futile.
“No!” Elaine screamed, as the chair stood uprightly.
The man grabbed the phone and turned it off before slipping it into his pocket. He raised his head so his dark brown eyes met hers. There was no sympathy in his cold dark pits.
“What were you trying to do?” Frederico’s cold voice came through first.
“I want to get out of here!” she screamed. “My fiancé is looking for me, and when he finds me-”
