"What! What do you mean by that? How was he released?"

"Someone from the high-ups called me," the sheriff says, deciding not to disclose the identity of the commissioner. "I had no choice but to let him go, else I won’t be much of a sheriff any longer."

As soon as he finishes speaking, he hangs up, causing Mr. Santiago to angrily hurl his cell phone away and it smashes against the wall.

Mrs. Avery rushes into the room at the sound of the noise and her jaws drop sighting the shattered phone on the floor.

"What’s wrong, hubby?" She hurriedly asks, wide-eyed. "Talk to me, please. Will you?" When Mr. Santiago wouldn’t speak, she probes.

"It’s the sheriff, he just told me that Lucien is out of jail," Mr. Santiago says dejectedly.

"How is that? How could he go scot-free? Like, who could possibly be that person who released him? Did the sheriff say anything about that?"
