Thanking Victor felt wrong, unnatural. But she was grateful nevertheless. What she had done, her deal with the devil, at least it was not in vain.
Victor only laughed. “Don’t thank me, sweetheart. I didn’t do it out of the kindness of my heart.” His voice was smooth, almost amused. “In fact, I don’t have a heart. People in my line of work can’t afford one.”
Anna’s stomach reacted weirdly to the guy’s words, and not even in a good way. She didn’t doubt his words. She had seen firsthand what Victor was capable of, how effortlessly he wielded power, how easily he played with people’s lives.
Before she could respond, her phone buzzed with a message. She pulled it away from her ear and looked at the screen.
A picture. It was a university campus, sprawling and pristine, with tall buildings and students walking across the green lawns.
