Chapter 99. Lionheart

Deep down inside Chris’ heart, he is convinced that Lara is telling the truth. After all, that is the only possible explanation for this stoic decision of hers — refusing to grant him legitimacy as her husband and father of her children.

His right brow arches up. Now he gets it. The price is too high, way above what he ever imagined. If Lara is indeed the Lara Croft — the heir to the Croft Dynasty — as she claims, that would mean that whatever is left of that enormous Croft fortune falls to him and his bloodline. This thought causes a shrivel inside his bones.

The truth is, he will need to process this new possibility because, from his experience, such humongous progress comes with responsibilities that attract dangers beyond his imagination.

“Baby girl, I have to leave for work…” He kisses her hair, breaking the hug, and staring into her eyes intensely. “But no matter what, I promise we will be fine. I will do my very best to protect you, okay?”

Lara nods. “
