Chapter 5
Gage’s POV
I sighed a sigh of relief and glanced at her. She was understandably petrified after a sniper narrowly missed her a few minutes earlier.
“I’m Scarlett. Scarlett Hearthstone,” she whimpered.
“If you’re going to use a pen name, you should pick one with a kickass surname. Even though it will make you less of a household name, at least you won’t be known as Matthews,” I commented.
“What the hell are you saying?” She seemed to think I was being dishonest with my response.
“I apologize. Both surnames just don’t stand out. The ‘Hearth’ probably should have been scratched out of the stone. That’s an excellent alternative. Hence, the name ‘Scarlett Stone.’ The name is like a game on my tongue.”
“Hearthstone,” she felt compelled to set me straight.
“Whatever. In this case, Gage Renner,” I offered her my right hand while keeping my left on the wheel. “FBI special agent.” The more I extended my arm, the less she cared.
