Chapter 25. Accept Me
There was a brief silence as Lacey continued staring at Detective White with a confused look. She wasn’t mistaken; it was Detective Jones who had called her. His name had flashed on the top of her phone screen before she had answered the call. Who would have called her to give out such information if not Detective Jones?
Alex broke the silence with a fit of coughing to clear irritation in his throat. He glanced at Lacey and whispered, “It was I who called you.” There was hesitation in his voice.
“What?” Lacey stared with anxiousness. “That’s not possible!”
“You still have not told me who he is,” Detective Jones said with a trace of nervousness in his voice. He was tense, and Lacey could see jealousy in his eyes.
Lacey glanced at him. “Does it matter?”
“Yes, it does matter,” Detective Jones answered hastily. “If I don’t know who he is, how can I keep you safe?”
