The sound cut clean through the noise of the street. Cain’s head snapped slightly to the side from the impact and silence fell around them for a split second, then slowly, Cain turned his face back to her.

His expression didn’t flare, didn’t explode, but his eyes, they caught hers and he saw it; the tears she refused to let fall. And the anger sitting right behind them too.

Liana didn’t say a word. She didn’t wait to explain. She just turned and walked away, back across the street. Back to Carrie.

Across from them, Jerry stood frozen after she slapped Cain and his cheeks turned pink. “What the…”

His eyes followed Liana, purely in shock, but then, they landed on Carrie and he recognized her immediately. He had met her just by the road and they had spent some time with each other till Cain brought about his rule so he stopped seeing her.

He held her gaze for a brief second. She didn’t react. She just grabbed Liana’s hand and pulled her along till they dis
