Chapter 40. You Do Not Know Him at All

Ava’s POV

It was Max.

I tightened my hand into a fist around my phone so tightly that the knuckles of my hand turned white. My heart pounded in my chest louder than the horns blaring on the street.

What was he trying to do?

The sound of my phone ringing caught my attention and I saw that it was Claire calling.

I took a deep breath and answered, “Claire?”

“Ava,” she spoke rapidly. “Max is here with Sophie.”

“Are you kidding me?” I ran my hands through my hair in frustration.

“You seriously have to see this,” She scoffed. “She’s all wrapped up in toys and laughing like she and Max have been best buddies for a long time.”

I felt like I was going to get sick.

I simply hung up without speaking, my shaking hand shoving the phone into my pocket. There was a second pause and then Mason’s vehicle pulled over on the side of the road next to me. Mason leaped out as soon as he saw me, his expression frantic.
