Max’s POV

I sank into my chair the moment Ava left my office.

The sound of the door slamming echoed through the walls, and the toys I had picked out for Sophie were scattered on the floor, mocking me with their brightness and uselessness. I just sat there, dejected. Sophie’s tear-stained face and Ava’s accusatory glare churned around in my head like a punishment.

I ran my fingers through my hair and placed my elbows on my desk while cursing under my breath. I’d thought that I would be able to melt her heart and win her over.
