Chapter 104. The One You Love

Elaine barely slept all night. She kept waking up from various dreams in which she was married to Melvin. They were not dreams. More like nightmares.

She was at the door as soon as Andrew opened it, his hair still wet from the shower but he smelt clean and fresh with droplets of water flowing down his face.

“About last night-” she began.

“I don’t want to hear it. I’ll be sure to tell Melvin your ridiculous story.”

She shook her head at him. “I used to think I could trust you. Guess, I was wrong.”

“Don’t pin this on me.” He stood in the middle of the doorway, preventing her from going into the room. “You were in love with someone else. Yet you accepted a proposal from my brother.”

“Forget that I said that. I was wrong,” she said.

She was wrong about Andrew. She didn’t love him. She could not love a man so cruel who twisted her every word to paint her as a demon. She had never stolen a cent from anyone.

“I can’t forget it, and I won’t.”<
