Chapter 58. Cut Off
Melvin paced in front of the hospital room while he waited for the doctor to return with an update on his grandfather’s tests. He’d considered calling his grandmother but he did not want her to worry. And there was almost no point to it. The secretary would’ve called home anyways.
“This is all your fault,” Gwen said, folding her arms as she eyed him.
“My fault? How?”
“Your stupid proposal brought on this heart attack.”
Melvin stood by the wall and peeped into the room where his grandfather lay under white cotton bedsheets with an IV line attached to his right hand and a heart rate monitoring machine beside his bed.
His grandfather’s health had slowly been declining but it wasn’t something anyone outside their family would notice. The man worked like a machine that never needed oiling, maintenance or spare parts. Continuously grinding and expanding the family’s empire.
