Chapter 62. Hospital Visit

The next place she had to visit was her office. She’d ignored Presley’s calls and Jean’s too since the incident. But the bills would not pay itself and most importantly, her work would not be done by anybody else. Timothy would make sure of that. She suspected that he found her easier to push over than the rest of the staff.

The moment she stepped into the building, the everyday chatter and work business seized as all eyes looked to her. No one said a word but someone coughed. They all seemed to be frozen in a weird version of the time game.

She walked past the cubicles until she got to Presley’s door where Jean held a steaming cup of coffee.

“Jean, good morning.”

Jean raised her head, her pink eyes boring into Elaine’s skull. Elaine dropped her eyes to Jean’s sandaled feet.

“I don’t want to hear it. We had one chance with the Swernbach family, and you blew it.”

“How did I blow it?”

“Mr. Swernbach is threatening to call off the whole thing.”
