Elaine stepped out of the hospital clutching her red wooly scarf to her chest. George Swernbach would be fine. She was sure of that. But…
She cast her gaze behind her, staring at the owner of the footsteps that followed her down the long coffee cream hallway. Melvin walked toward her with a determined look on his face but all she wanted to do was step down the circular marble steps and walk past the statues made of green plants.
Outside the hospital gates, a crowd of black cars and reporters stood, some of them testing their equipment. Others looked toward her with some interest on their faces. She rubbed the sides of her temple. She had nothing to tell them. Nothing more than what the doctor had said. He would be fine and if she hadn’t got to him when she did – he would be dead.
