Gabbie POV
“You-you said you would call.”
“I know, Gabbie. I couldn’t contain myself. I’ve seen you around town and… honey, can we talk?” She stepped closer and my heart beat at an unsteady pace.
“I… I don’t know.” I raked a trembling hand through my hair.
“Gabbie? Is everything okay?” Marleen came from her office.
She screamed and cupped her mouth. Anya rolled her eyes. I flinched as Marleen stood next to me.
“Oh my goodness! Anya, you’re really alive!”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if my Mom had a headstone made for me in the local cemetery, too.”
“Oh, that poor woman hasn’t shown her face in years. She lost everyone.”
Anya didn’t seem the least bit concerned about her lonely mother.
“Hmm, she pushed everyone anyway. I didn’t come for her. I’m technically not supposed to be here.”
