Chapter 50. I’m Sorry
Melvin paced back and forth over the dark blue rug in his grandfather’s lobby at the Swernbach hotel.
His grandfather’s invitation couldn’t have come at a worse time. He’d avoided the man since they shared a bottle of wine in his home office. Grandma had kicked him out of his house and he’d spent a considerable amount of time in other hotels. Thanks to his trysts with Gwen, he’d learnt to be content with some less-than-ideal place. Places that were far beneath his standard.
“He will see you now.” The bodyguard in front of his grandfather’s door nodded.
Melvin pushed the two golden doors open and stepped into a replica of his grandfather’s home office except from the tree-form visitors chair. The old man’s body was not on his seat at the raised platform. Instead, he was seated on the leather chair in the middle of the office, across from Elaine, smiling at the girl.
“Granddad?”
“Here he is,” his grandfather smiled at him. One of those bright golden smile
